She was one of nine children living with fifty year old Rose who's husband wasn't around. Her life wasn't fun. They had burning crosses on their front yard as the first black family to move into the small town where she was from. This is Rose. Whitley said her and her sister were often mistaken for Roses daughters as people thought they looked like her. Whitley and her twin sister, Whitney. She also had an older sister, Britney. They were allowed to keep their original names their birth parents gave them. She experienced racism in her elementary school and was happy to always have her sister with her through the hard times. She talks about her life with Rose and the other children in the household. Whitley and her sister were good at track and did it in highschool and even did it in college.
